The day former President Donald Trump announces a 2024 bid for president, the Republican National Committee will be in a bind. It may already be there. Trump is the party's biggest money maker and as an ex president, his name and record are natural components for the committee to tout in emails and fundraising pleas. But that's come at a cost. The party and its leaders have committed to staying neutral in the upcoming presidential election. And as the Republican National Committee continues to tout Trump and even push his private business ventures through its official channels, the fear grows that it is dispensing with even the veneer of neutrality. "How do you stay neutral when the single greatest driver of raising money is using Trump's name?" asked one former party official, who remained anonymous to offer a candid perspective. Having a former president in the mix for a future presidential run is uncharted territory for the RNC. In multiple interviews, Chair Ronna McDaniel has made clear she and the party plan to remain "neutral" during the primary season. In a sign of their commitment to not picking sides, the Republican National Committee passed a rule to bring back primary debates, giving candidates an equal advantage, and the presidential nominating process remains identical to 2016, among other things. Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel is considering running for reelection for a fourth term leading her party in 2023, and she has received encouragement from former President Donald Trump, according to two people familiar with the discussions. McDaniel met with Trump recently to discuss the possibility of staying on another two years after her current term ends following the midterm elections. McDaniel, who has also received encouragement from some Republican National Committee members, has told people that she is inclined to run again if the party fares well in the election. It's a turnabout for McDaniel, who privately told Republican National Committee members in 2020 that she was planning for this to be her final two year term as chair. But Trump appeared to hint at his support for McDaniel in a video played for Republican National Committee members gathered for the committee's annual spring meeting in Memphis. The former president lavished praise on McDaniel for doing a "tremendous job" and said that "conservatives are united" behind her. Should McDaniel serve another term, she would become the longest serving RNC chair in recent history. Those close to McDaniel stressed that she doesn't plan to decide her future at the Republican National Committee until after the November elections. The RNC will vote for the next chair at its annual winter meeting, to be held Jan. 2023. "The Republican National Committee chairwoman, members, and staff are solely focused on winning in 2022 and taking control of the House and Senate. Washington, D.C. First, Mike Franken said he would only serve those he agrees with. Then, Franken went off on Twitter this morning calling Iowa voters either treasonous, apathetic or fearful. Then, over the weekend, Franken claimed that Iowa needed to elect him to the Senate so Democrats don't have to rely on Joe Manchin to pass their liberal agenda. Remember, Franken wants to turn Iowa into California. We don't think Mike Franken knows which state he is vying to represent. House Democrats decided they haven't gone far enough when it comes to attacking Americans' Second Amendment rights and once again are comingfor our guns.On Wednesday, July 20th, the House Judiciary Committee will markup H.R. 1808, the Assault Weapons Ban of 2021, and H.R. 2814, the Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act. H.R. 1808 would ban AR-15s and similar semi-automatic rifles, which are among the most popular firearms being sold today, with nearly 20 million in circulation as of late 2020. H.R. 2814 would repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA), which was enacted in 2005 with broad bipartisan support, to protect the firearms industry from frivolous and politically motivated lawsuits. Richard Walters began his career at the lowest rungs of the Republican National Committee when he was 23. Now, at 30, he's the Republican National Committee chief of staff, earning far more than any other official there, including his boss, the chairwoman, and the top officials at the Democratic National Committee. The rich compensation might have raised eyebrows but for the fact that the RNC obscured it. Last year, Walters earned a salary of $238,266, but the party paid him an additional $135,000 through a shell company he established in December 2018 called Red Wave Strategies. Federal Election Commission reports described the Republican National Committee's payments to Red Wave as "political strategy services," as if the money had flowed to an independent contractor and not Walters himself. "According to FEC records, 93 percent of Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto's individual donors are from out of state, with the highest concentration of donors from California and New York. In 2021, out-of-state donors accounted for 79 percent of Cortez Masto's total. For the recent filing period ending June 30, 2022, the total amount of individual donations amounted to $1,924,783.38 . The DC-Maryland-Virginia area donors surpassed Nevada donations to the senator totaling $203,796.66. Nearly 50% of her second quarter donors listed their occupations as "unemployed." Leading the PAC donations are the usual suspects: progressive groups focused on abortion and voting rights and unions. Big tobacco Altria maxed out their contribution as did the National Education Association, who, when not advocating for school shutdowns, have made recent headlines when they contacted the Department of Justice to identify and label parents as domestic terrorists if parents vocally opposed school shutdowns, universal masking, forced vaccination, and transgender, racially biased education in elementary schools.
